Metal Work is an elective at Palmer which delves into the techniques and processes of creating things with metal. Within metal work as a profession, there are many different sub-trades that reside underneath it, like the following: sheet metal, industrial kitchen equipment, stainless steel, duct work, and other subsidiaries like industry bridge building, high-rise building reinforcement, and welders. There is an incredibly diverse variety of things you can do and create under metal work, which are most often, if not always, practical and necessary items in workplaces.

Some projects the higher-grade students get to do is creating a metal toolbox, a key-chain, and canoes or boats, which the students then sell to turn for a profit. With the money gathered from these projects, they have the opportunity to make a much bigger project determined on the amount of money made. Other times, the projects are always taken home to use or keep as accomplishments.

A big part of learning in metal work--as well as in general-- is making mistakes. It's very easy to mess up in metal work with all the technical prowess needed to work with the material, and in a classroom setting it's important to know that making mistakes is vital to improving at the craft.

Metal can be intimidating as it's a strong material, however, it's actually easier to make things out of than some other materials. A lot of the operations in the metal shop are performed with handheld tools, which give the students more control over the precision and technique.

MESS UPS HAPPEN - DETERMINATION INSTEAD OF DISCOURAGEMENT

Metal Work is a difficult to navigate subject, as it's not a more conventional elective, but it uplifts and supports future welders who want to get into the trade. A lot of the insight gathered from this course is to be confident in your decisions and don't be afraid of messing up, because mistakes happen quite often in the metal shop, and will happen much more later in life.
