The process of being in a website designing course

Mrs. Leung's Web Design 10 Class

Website Designing is a course available to 10th graders at RCP as an elective above keyboarding. It is a computer programming class in which you learn how to create a professional looking website by industrial processes. Because I hadn't encountered a course like this before, I was intrigued as to what it could entail because of the vague line of "web development".

In this class, we've been learning how a website's layouts attract a viewer, what's most optimal to all users, of course, what's most visually appealing and overall learning how to create
our own websites uniquely. As someone who likes to write from time to time, I was delighted to find out that we would be able to report on the many different subjects at our school. This will just be me walking through my process so far of creating this website briefly.

Firstly, when I discovered that it was by using a pre-made website builder, I was admittedly a little disappointed. I quickly got over it, as graphic design is still an important part of various other projects unrelated to programming, and acknowledging that it might've been too overwhelming and/or complex for a completely blind student to immediately get into.

We were tasked with creating a visually pleasing newspaper website, based off of other popular news sites and seeing how the physical paper converted in the online space. Finding out how and where the images and text were supposed to be arranged was the first step in making this site, seeing as the clickable images make reading articles easier, you'd need to know just where to catch your readers' attention.

I'm not the best at graphic design, so I was a little nervous, but I ended up getting the hang of it pretty quickly. The first weeks were mostly just prepping us in getting used to the website builder and its functionalities. Then, we had to interview teachers and students in various subjects in groups of 3 or 4. I got the easier end of the stick, the teacher I had to interview being my own in this subject, so my group and I carefully crafted our interviewing questions and talked to our teacher. The interviews went smoothly, and soon we had to post our resources (photos, b-roll, and interviews) for other groups to utilise.

For my favourite part, it's this! Finding the interviews of the other groups and using the information in them to write some news articles for real material to be on this site. The workload is rather light, seeing as our work computers don't allow us to handle them like personal ones, downloads and all. But, I rather enjoy this class as it's a creative outlet visually while also being digital, which I'm interested in.

All in all, not the worst class to take if you know what you're signing up for.
