While most of the appreciation for visual art comes from the appearance of the piece, many artists carefully craft a story and/or message behind their art.
The source material for creating a piece of artwork is almost always an idea or concept that's been preconceived by the artist and has a theme that's really important to them. Like with any creative work, the messages are not always completely direct, which creates an open interpretation for any viewer and bring a widespread diverse outlook across all audiences. The real beauty stems from the potential to communicate entirely without words, to have the piece speak to the audience and resonate with them, and to make them feel what the artist was intending to say.

Along with interpretations, the style of the pieces themselves are not the same across all artists. There are so many different ways to illustrate and the methods are entirely unique to the person creating because illustrating is not something strictly taught one way.
In fact, many artists are self taught and find their own ways to abide by the general laws of standard artistry and cultivate a look of their very own.

The fact that it is a an art form so subjective and diverse is so beautiful and reflects how humans actually are in reality. While yes, visual art is visual, it deserves to be acknowledged for its deeper and fuller meanings that bring something entirely new to just the surface.
